MadeByGilly Home Edition
In 2017 one of my New Year resolutions was to start a blog. Which if you’re reading this you may have guessed I managed to do. Writing said blog has been rather sporadic, and I’m not sure anyone other than my mum has read my ramblings (actually, I’m not sure even my Mum has read them…) but I have found an unexpected amount of pleasure in documenting my makes and thoughts on the various crafting activities I’ve undertaken. I started with a post confessing to the internet that I am a knitter, and the best thing that’s come out of this little project over the past year is that I’m now an out and proud crafter (I even knit on the bus to work these days!) and no longer hide my “old lady” activities from the world. Not a bad outcome for one of the very few New Year resolutions I've ever managed to keep.
Looking back on the makes I made in 2017, there are only a handful of items I kept for myself. Part of the reason for this of course is that it would have been rather strange to stockpile baby blankets when I don’t have a baby, and there’s only so many soft toys I feel I need to have at the grand old age of 32 (i.e. those from my childhood… not a troop of cute elephants I’ve made myself).
We bought a house last autumn, and I was so excited at the idea of having a place that was finally our own to decorate and furnish exactly how we wanted. However, I have kept finding myself standing in shops or perusing Etsy staring at gorgeous things that I can’t then bring myself to buy. My own little rule is that if I’m capable of having a stab at making it myself, I shouldn’t throw money at it. Also, it’s always a tad embarrassing when someone assumes your lovely knitted blanket is homemade and is super complimentary about it, and then you have to ‘fess up and admit it’s actually from Ikea…
However, due to all the gifting going on because #myfriendskeephavingbabies, I’ve never actually managed a MadeByGilly version of any of the nice things I covet, and as a result our lovely new home is distinctly lacking in soft furnishings, especially being the house of a self-declared knitting/sewing/crafting addict.
I think its time to make a few things for me, and so I am hoping that 2018 will result in some MadeByGilly items knocking around our pad that look a tiny little bit like something that you might possibly see in Oliver Bonas or Habitat. Hmmmmm...
And in the meantime, my lovely lovely friends continue to have lovely lovely babies, and very excitingly four more small people will be arriving in the coming months, plus my lovely little sister is making me an Aunty this year, so the baby blanket factory won’t be closing any time soon.
2018 – The year of more baby blankets. And cushions.
